Softball Diamond in the Rough

Paul Sliman and Amherst High School Girls Softball coach Bill Matthews presented a proposal to Amherst Township Trustees on August 12 regarding the need for Girls Softball fields in the Amherst area. Sliman's Dodge sponsors the Amherst Girl's Softball Association (AGSA), whose home field is located at Sliman's Diamond on the corner of Middle Ridge an SR58 in Amherst Township. In the summer of 2004, five teams will be sponsored by the AGSA, amounting to approximately 65 participants. Team age categories will be 10-under, 12-under, (2) 14-under and 18-under. One of the 14-under teams has already qualified for the National Softball Association National tournament in 2004.

The increasing interest in Girls Softball has resulted in an increased need for ball fields. In their proposal, Mr. Sliman and Mr. Matthews requested construction of a Girls Fast Pitch Softball field in the Amherst Township Park. Sliman's Dodge would donate the fencing, clay fill dugouts and labor to construct a Girls Fast Pitch Softball Diamond. Maintenance of the field would be provided by Sliman's Dodge in cooperation with

Amherst Township. Field dimensions would be the same as used at Sliman's Diamond, and both dugouts would have concrete floors, with roofs to be added at a later date.

General Manager of the AGSA (Paul Sliman/Bill Matthews) would handle field scheduling. Games and practices would be played on Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday. Evening game start times would be 6:30pm, and weekend and practice times would vary. The field would be available for Public use during the day and when the AGSA is not in season. The AGSA season runs the middle of April through the middle July.

This improvement to the Amherst Township Park, without the expenditure of public funds, was welcome by the Trustees through unanimous approval of the proposal, subject to agreements to be developed by the Lorain County Prosecutors Office. Many thanks to Mr. Sliman and the volunteers that will bring this welcome addition to Amherst Township.

Vote – Your Right, Duty & Responsibility

Voting is our right, voting is your duty, and voting is your responsibility. Regardless of your knowledge or feelings toward individuals or issues, it is very important that you vote. Your vote counts! The percentage and number of voters in our community influences many of the decisions that affect Amherst Township. Slow Down–a Life May Depend on it

Due to an increased number of homes along Bechtel Road, and several request from local residents, the Trustees requested an engineering and traffic study of this area. The study recommends a speed reduction from 55 mph to 45 mph. The traffic study has been forwarded to the Director of Highways for determination and declaration of a reasonable and safe speed limit.

The Trustees and Sheriff Department also has complaints about speeding vehicles in other areas of Amherst Township. Please think before you drive, and maintain a safe speed. Your extra patience and a single minute may save your life, or the life of a neighbor.

Burning Prohibited

The burning of leaves, grass clippings, brush, and limbs is prohibited in the township. Unnecessary tax dollars are spent when the fire department responds to a fire call which is not a true emergency. If you have any questions, lease call Fire Inspector, Wayne Eppley, at 324-3921, or contact one of your township trustees. Yard waste may be brought to the Amherst Township Garage for disposal. See front page of the newsletter for days, times, and location.
