CHILD SAFETY
As warmer weather draws near, parents are reminded to keep their children away from the “Sewer and Retention Basin” work and any roadway construction.
2004 Road Construction
- Phase I of the Hidden Valley concrete replacement project will begin in the Spring of 2004.
- Stang Road and Middle Ridge Road (west of Quarry Road) are scheduled for resurfacing. This is an OPWC (Ohio Public Works Commission) Project, with the local share of 41% being paid by the township.
- Upon completion of the “Relief Sewer” installation, the Lorain County Engineers Department is scheduled to resurface Middle Ridge Road from the Amherst Corporation line to West Ridge Road.

New Chipper
Amherst Township has purchased a new wood and brush chipper, which was partially funded with money from the “Solid Waste” program. The new chipper will be used for wooded yard waste that has been brought down to the township garage and for cleanup after bad storm weather events. It can handle logs up to 10 inches in diameter.
NEW SPEED LIMIT
As of January 9, 2004, Bechtel Road has a posted speed limit of 45 MPH.
Residents are also reminded to observe speed limits throughout all of the township and especially to slow down near construction areas.
Twp. Bulletin Board
Scheduled meetings and Trustee Work Sessions are regularly posted in the bulletin board at the Township Hall. These are public meetings and residents are welcome to attend. |

NEW COMMUNITY POLICING OFFICER
|
|
We would like to introduce Deputy Jason Smith as the new Community Policing Officer for Amherst Township.
Deputy Jason Smith has been employed at the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office for six years. Deputy Smith has worked the afternoon shift as well as the midnight shift as a Road Deputy. He is also assigned to the Lorain County S.W.A.T. Team and is a “Field Training Officer” for new recruits.
His interest in law enforcement came from his father, who retired from the Elyria Police Department after 30 years service at the rank of Captain.
He is married, has two children, and resides in the City of Elyria. After graduating from Elyria High School in 1992, he attended the University of Toledo, where he played football. His interests include hunting, fishing, and weight lifting.
We would also like to thank Deputy Motylewski for his service to Amherst Township and to wish him well on his new assignment.
To learn more about the Lorain County Sheriff’s Department, visit their website at:
www.loraincountysheriff.com |
|
According to Deputy Smith, a frequent and common crime that the Sheriff’s Department has to deal with involves the theft of vehicles and 4-wheelers.
To help prevent such crimes, he advises that you keep your vehicles locked at night and do not keep valuables in them. Also, keep 4-wheelers locked in a garage at night.

Amherst Township Detention Basin

The 830,000-gallon Kay Drive Wastewater Detention Basin is pictured above. The scale of this underground Detention Basin can be determined by noting the three construction workers in the picture.
|
|
If your travels take you to the Northeast portion of Amherst Township, you will note a considerable amount of construction equipment and green pipe along Middle Ridge Road and the Northern portion of Oberlin Road. The activity is all part of a sanitary sewer service improvement project undertaken by the City of Lorain. To minimize the possibility of sanitary back-ups during wet weather storm events, the City of Lorain and the Lorain County Commissioners collaborated in financing an underground detention basin and associated relief sewers. The detention basin can store over 830,000 gallons of wastewater during periods of heavy rainstorms and wastewater demand. After the storm has subsided, the detention basin can be emptied in a controlled release of the wastewater to the PQM treatment facility on West Erie Avenue in the City of Lorain.
In addition to minimizing the probability of sewer backup, the detention basin and relief sewers |
|
minimize the potential for the release of untreated wastewater by the PQM plant during rainstorms, thus preventing pollutant discharge to Lake Erie. This design for wastewater management helps to protect our environment, preserve wastewater treatment plant capacity for future growth, comply with Amherst Township’s Stormwater Management Program, meet EPA requirements and protects the health and property of residents in Amherst Township and the City of Lorain.
The detention basin and relief sewer sanitary construction projects are schedule for completion in the Fall of 2004. Upon completion of the sanitary projects, the Lorain County Engineering Department plans to resurface and improve the eastern portion of Middle Ridge Road. These projects may prove to be an inconvenience for the Township residents living in the construction area, but the long-term benefits should help temper the inconvenience. |
